John Lubbock said that what we see depends on what we are looking for. How can we stay positive when we are inundated with news of earthquakes, hurricanes, floods and wars? All those negative images and messages can easily lead us down the path of doom and gloom.

If all we look for is the dark side of life, that's what we see. We become a naysayer. Pessimism chips away at our views, beliefs, values and thoughts. We then begin to see and create the global drama on a personal level. We get caught in a quagmire of negativity.

Current events, as bad as they are, do not have to rule our lives. I am not espousing denial of what is happening in our world. I am suggesting we owe it to ourselves to look for the bright side to round out the picture of what we see. Looking for the good feeds a sense of empowerment versus helplessness. The following ideas are things you can use to instill hope and optimism into your life.

*Begin by counting your blessings on a daily basis. What are you
thankful for? Gratitude is a powerful motivating factor.

*Seek a little humor in your day. Read the cartoons or rent a funny
movie. Humor adds lightness to your life.

*Donate your time or money to a worthy cause. Helping those less
fortunate can help you feel you are contributing to a higher
purpose.

*Read an inspirational or motivational quote every day. It will help
focus your mind on the brighter side. How can you incorporate what
you read into your activities?

*Use daily rituals. Lighting a candle can help you connect to your
purpose. Meditating has a calming, peaceful effect.

*Focus on today. You can't change the past, predict the future or
change the global picture. You can treat today as a gift to enjoy
to its fullest.

November is a time to celebrate and be thankful. In the coming weeks we will be celebrating Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving in the United States. Both of those holidays are special remembrances. No matter where you live in the world, you can add to your life's cornucopia by celebrating and giving thanks for who you are, what you have and what you can do.

Life can still be beautiful in the midst of disasters. It all depends on what you are looking for.
