Our Search for Meaning

How can we make sense out of the senseless? It seems impossible to answer that question when tragedy strikes. The terrorist attacks on America September 11th are such tragedies. The initial shock is gone and reality is here. Coping with devastation is now our challenge. How can we do that?

Victor Frankl, a noted psychiatrist and holocaust survivor, wrote in Man's Search for Meaning that our deepest desire is to search for meaning and purpose. To help us cope with tragedy we must find a personal meaning for our life. That meaning becomes our prime motivational force in helping us cope with tragic circumstances. It's what helped him survive three years in the concentration camp at Auschwitz. Perhaps we can learn from his teachings.

To help find meaning and purpose Frankl suggested we (1) create a work or do a deed, (2) experience something or encounter someone and (3) have an attitude that helps us when faced with unavoidable suffering. As we sat in front of our televisions we saw those ideas come alive on the streets of New York, Washington D.C. and in Pennsylvania as we watched thousands of people unite in a common cause. Helping hands from across the nation and around the world then reached out to join the cause. Meaning and purpose appeared in the face of tragedy.

With the onset of a tragedy we begin to feel like the Cowardly Lion in the Wizard of Oz. Our courage to endure is tested. We are filled with angst and despair and we fear the pain is more than we can bear. And it is, for a while. Then somehow we reach deep inside and find the inner courage we thought we had lost. That strength allows us to roar again.

We may never be able to make sense out of the senseless but we can search for meaning and purpose. We can connect and contribute to a greater cause. We can keep our faith that mankind's goodness will prevail!

On a personal note I was vacationing when the attacks happened. I felt guilty as I watched the events unfold on television. Here I was hiking in Bryce and Zion National Parks surrounded by indescribable beauty as thousands of others were surrounded by unimaginable destruction.

It was heart warming to see the American flag waving proudly in the small towns we drove through. I could hardly wait to come home and put our flag out in front of the house. Returning home certainly had a special meaning this time. So did connecting with family and friends. I was reminded of how much I have to be grateful for.

My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with everyone who lost loved ones and who experienced the unspeakable trauma. The path ahead is uncertain for all of us but one thing is certain. We will recover and emerge stronger than ever as we search for our meaning!
